FISH-INS & BLACK/NATIVE SOLIDARITY IN THE 1960S
MARIAME KABA
Fish-ins & Black/Native Solidarity in the 1960s, HalfLetterPress, 2018
Mariame Kaba’s zine highlights how Indigenous and Black people recognized connections between their struggles. In the 1960s, inspired by the methods Black activists used in the Civil Rights Movement, Indigenous people organized fish-ins, direct actions on the waterways, to fight governmental repression that severely limited their ability to fish on their own rivers. Performer Dick Gregory participated in these actions. With beautiful illustrations by Jon Bailiff, Kaba’s zine offers important lessons for those committed to building coalitions.
